New supply contracts awarded to Foamit Group are a continuation of several major Nordic infrastructure projects using Foamit Group’s foam glass. Deliveries for the E20 and E18 motorway projects from Foamit Group’s Swedish and Norwegian production plants will start during 2024.
Foamit Group’s foam deliveries for the E18 and E20 road projects in Sweden and Norway total 75 000 m3. Including the new Vihti Nummela business park site and the previously announced E6 road repair project in Sweden, Foamit Group’s recent orders total 155 000 m3, equivalent to the production capacity of one factory per year. Foam glass was chosen for the infrastructure projects because of its good insulation features, low cost and ease of processing. In addition, foam glass is considerably lighter than traditional crushed stone.

Foam glass used in expansion of the Swedish E20 motorway
In Sweden, foam glass is used in a project launched by the local transport authority, Trafikverket, in Västra Götaland to convert the Hindsberg-Muggebo section of the E20 near Mariestad into a four-lane motorway. The project is one of three remaining phases of the E20 expansion project, which improves road safety, promotes regional growth and creates better traffic conditions on one of Sweden’s main roads. Completion of the project is expected in spring 2027.
Veidekke, the construction group in charge of the construction project, selected Foamit Group as supplier of lightweight material for the road structures. In selecting the right lightweight material, the company had to consider cost and availability of the material as well as on-site workability. Foam glass provided a viable solution: it is lightweight material that is easy to work with, it is stackable thanks to a high friction angle, and it is readily available.
The foam glass will be delivered from the production plant of Hasopor AB, Foamit Group’s Swedish subsidiary, during 2024–2025.
Foam glass strengthens Norway’s E18 motorway upgrade
The Norwegian transport authority, Statens Vegvesen, is building a new E18 road between Fornebukrysset and Strand in the Oslo area. The authority is responsible for both planning and construction of the road. The first phase of the construction project started in September 2023 in cooperation with the construction group Skanska, and according to preliminary estimates, construction will continue until January 2030. The foam glass is supplied from the production plant of Glasopor AS, a subsidiary of the Foamit Group in Norway.
